This week’s outtake from my book ‘Cruising the World – From Gondolas to Megaships’ is a young cruiser dreaming of Christmas while at sea on a South America cruise aboard the Norwegian Sun.
Spending Christmas on a cruise ship in the southern hemisphere seemed like a novel idea. It would be a nice get-away from winter in Michigan and an experience of Latin American culture during the holidays, since most of the passengers would be Spanish speaking. However as it turned out, a cruise around the tip of South America in summer can be very chilly in Chile (excuse the pun). Nonetheless, seeing the impressive glaciers close-up while cruising through the Straits of Magellan was worth it. (Just wish I had brought my goose down winter coat.)
So what is Christmas like on a cruise ship? Truthfully, despite the decorations, I didn’t think Christmas Day was out of the ordinary, since every day seems like a holiday when you’re cruising.
Feliz Navidad everyone!
