The CRUISING PHOTO of the WEEK for the fourth week is an outtake from a two-week cruise on the Viking River Cruises longship Viking Pride from Amsterdam to Budapest.
Despite having eleven pages for photos in ‘Cruising the World’ chronicling the route on the Rhine, Maine, and Danube rivers, this photo didn’t quite fit into the layout.
One of the attractions of river cruising is being able to spend ample time ashore exploring the cities and towns along the way. Nevertheless, some onboard activities are provided. This oversized chess set is one recreational opportunity on the top deck of the ship that is mostly decorative. Reading and sightseeing from the deck chairs at upper left were much more popular with passengers.
The photo was taken while the Viking longship was docked on the Danube at Vienna, Austria. Now I’m wondering why I was shooting this at the time instead of photographing in the city.
